What I see as a problem for most students is not the obvious “they do not know/understand mathematics as a body of knowledge”. An immense part of mathematics is the style of reasoning – in terms of logic, in terms of applicability and problem solving, and also in terms of creativity; in other words, mathematics is about noticing and using the patterns and connections underlying our reality. Thus, the course strives not so much to teach mathematics but rather to give a glimpse of those connections.
