9th Grade English Exam Prep

This course will improve your overall language skills and equip you with effective strategies for performing well in standardized English exams, even when time is limited.

Each class will teach you what strategies to use and how to approach the tasks through hands-on practice. You’ll engage in an in-depth English language study, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The curriculum covers advanced grammar and vocabulary, critical analysis of texts, essay writing, and effective communication.  

By the end of the course, students will:

  1. Attain a high level of proficiency in the English language, including advanced grammar, vocabulary, and language usage,
  2. Develop the ability to critically analyze and interpret complex texts, enhancing both comprehension and critical thinking,
  3. Master the art of essay writing,
  4. Improve speaking and listening skills, enabling clear and confident communication. 

Each participant undergoes a thorough language assessment to determine their proficiency level and place them in groups.

WEEK 1
  • Overview of the test. 
  • Concept of test strategies.
  • Overview of the listening tasks 1 & 2. 
  • General listening strategies, approach, and practice for listening tasks 1 & 2.
    • Listening Task 1: Matching questions – Matching situations with recordings – strategies.
    • Listening Task 2: Matching opinions – Matching opinions with speakers – strategies.
    • Skimming and scanning techniques.
  • Mock test on listening tasks 1 & 2.

Homework: 4 practice listening tasks 1 & 2 with the correct answers.

WEEK2
  • Overview of the listening task 3. 
  • General listening strategies, approach, and practice for listening task 3.
    • Listening Task 3: Fill-in-the-blank questions – everyday life situations – strategies.
    • Listening for specific details – strategies.
    • Listening Summary. 
    • Mock test on listening task 3.

Homework: 2 practice listening tasks 3 with the correct answers.

WEEK 3
  • Overview of the speaking task 1. 
  • General speaking strategies, approach, and practice for speaking task 1.
    • Speaking Task 1: Examining the prompt characterizing some specific issue, and giving a monologue with supporting details.
    • Useful expressions and phrases for task 1.
    • Monologue structure and techniques.
  • Mock test on speaking task 1.

Homework: 3 practice speaking task 1.

WEEK 4
  • Overview of the speaking tasks 2 & 3. 
  • General speaking strategies, approach, and practice for speaking tasks 2 & 3.
    • Speaking Task 2: Listening to the partner’s monologue, asking questions, and reaching agreement on a point. 
    • Speaking Task 3: Answering the teacher’s questions and justifying them.
    • Expressing opinion with supporting details.
    • Useful expressions and phrases for tasks 2 & 3.
  • Mock test on speaking tasks 2 & 3.

Homework: 2 practice speaking tasks 2 & 3.

WEEK 5
  • Overview of the writing task. 
  • General writing strategies, rubrics, organization, and practice for essay writing.
    • Writing Tasks: Essay/blog structure, thesis statements, topic sentences. 
  • Mock test on thesis statements and topic sentences.

Homework: 2 practice writing tasks.

WEEK 6
  • General writing strategies, rubrics, organization, and practice for essay writing.
    • Writing Task: Paragraph writing – Introductions, body. conclusions.
    • Making arguments, expressing opinions, and supporting details.
  • Mock test on paragraph writing.

Homework: 2 practice writing tasks.

WEEK 7
  • Overview of the reading tasks 1, 2 & 5. 
  • General reading strategies, approach, and practice for reading tasks 1, 2 & 5.
    • Reading Task 1: Matching the texts with the questions – strategies.
    • Reading Task 2: Multiple-choice questions based on the given text – strategies.
    • Skimming and scanning techniques.
  • Mock test on reading tasks 1, 2 & 5.

Homework: 3 practice reading tasks 1, 2 & 5 with the correct answers.

WEEK 8
  • Overview of the reading tasks 3 & 4. 
  • General reading strategies, approach, and practice for reading tasks 3 & 4.
    • Reading Task 3: Fill in the gaps with the missing information – strategies.
    • Summarizing techniques.
    • Concluding text techniques.
  • Mock test on reading tasks 3 & 4.
  • Final mock test.

Admission Requirements

English grade at least 6 in the most recent semester.

Completion Requirements

  • Attend at least 75% (6 out of 8) of the classes.
  • Successfully meet all course requirements (in-class tasks, mock exams).
