Business Ethics

Professional ethics is the set of standards adopted by professionals insofar as they see themselves acting as professionals. In this course, we shall deal with the issues of professional ethics broadly taken. Professional ethics cannot be understood without studying in detail the process of decision-making, which involves calculations about various sorts of issues. Professional opinion on a given problem is only one element in the array of constraints that one faces. The decision-maker has to be aware of her own preferences; the ethical, environmental, and legal consequences of her decisions; the issues related to the conflict of interest; confidentiality; intellectual property, etc. Clearly, there is no recipe that provides the guidelines applicable in all cases. Our decisions are made on the basis of what we believe. But we might be wrong. We can anticipate the future in a responsible manner by developing a set of skills that are necessary for making judgments in complex cases according to a thorough evaluation of the relevant elements. In this course, we shall try to develop the ability to think ahead and recognize ethical issues and decision-making patterns.
