On 28 October, for the first time in the Cēsis region, “Cēsis Puzzle Day” took place, bringing together 75 of the most ingenious students from 10th to 12th grade, who worked in teams to solve ten logic problems based on the principles developed by the Harvard University logic game. The winner was the Cēsis State Gymnasium team “Mēs ieradāmies.”
The 2nd place in the “Cēsis Puzzle Day” logic game went to the student team “Logic Experts” and the 3rd place to “ChatGPT-5” – both teams from Cēsis State Gymnasium.
The top five teams with the highest scores got the opportunity to participate in Riga Business School’s leadership program, “Future Changemakers Academy: Digital Content Creator,” from 9 November to 21 December.
Linda Markus-Narvila, Head of the Education Department of Cēsis Municipality: “I was very pleased to see so many young talents of Cēsis secondary school students together. Since he signed up for the team, he has been daring and unafraid of the unknown and the competition. I think it is important that today’s youth is open to different opportunities and offers. During the logic game, I liked to see how the cooperation within the teams was formed and how the information was selected, processed, and evaluated. This kind of event also trains concentration, attention, and stress resilience, which is very important. I would definitely recommend other municipalities to try organizing a logic game as it is a great opportunity for young people to think, do, learn, and experience together.”
Miks Dzenis, Head of the Cēsis Space Intelligence Centre: “A logic game like this first of all develops students’ cooperation skills to mutually agree on a common answer and understand the meaning of that answer. Secondly, critical thinking is used to solve problems by understanding how to approach the question differently to find the right answer. Finally, young people develop their digital skills using their smart devices, as how smart devices are used plays an important role in the speed at which tasks are solved. All these skills will be very useful for students’ future career choices in STEM or business.”
During the event, the Space Intelligence Centre provided a special activity for young people by organizing an interactive orienteering game at the Intelligence Centre. This allowed the students to form teams and enjoy the challenges of space exploration.
The game’s main objective is to improve students’ teamwork skills, problem-solving techniques, creativity, and critical thinking, which are essential prerequisites for developing STEM skills.
The logic game “Puzzle Day” was organized in the municipality of Cēsis within the framework of the sustainability of the European Social Fund project “Support for the development of individual competencies of learners” to ensure the diversity of educational services.
The logic game was organized by the Municipality of Cēsis and Riga Business School as a department of Riga Technical University in cooperation with Luminor Bank, Space Intelligence Centre, and Svētavots.
