On September 20th, the Sigulda Municipality will organize the logic game “Sigulda Puzzle Day” for the first time, gathering more than 150 10th-grade students from the Sigulda region. Teams will solve 10 logic challenges based on principles developed by the prestigious Harvard University logic games. The event is being organized in Latvia by Riga Business School, a division of Riga Technical University, with the aim of fostering students’ interest in STEM fields and the skills required for them.

In the fall of 2023, Riga Business School organized the “Riga Puzzle Day” logic game, which brought together 172 students from 11th grades in Riga’s municipal schools. This spring, Ogre State Gymnasium and the Ogre Municipal Department of Education also hosted the game for high school students in the Ogre region, with 80 participants.

The goal of the game is to stimulate students’ interest in various fields of technology, science, and mathematics. Engaging students in solving logic problems helps develop teamwork skills, problem-solving techniques, and enhances creative and critical thinking—key prerequisites for programming and other STEM skill development.

Kristaps Zaļais, Deputy Chairman of the Sigulda Municipality Council: “For Sigulda, it’s important to promote the development of digitalization and the STEM field, as these skills form a solid foundation for our future growth. Digital technologies and innovations are an integral part of modern life, opening up vast opportunities for all age groups, especially the younger generation. For our youth, it means not only acquiring modern skills but also becoming future leaders in science, technology, and digital innovation. The upcoming ‘Sigulda Puzzle Day’ is a great example of how the STEM field can serve as a shared educational and innovation platform for both students and teachers. We, as a municipality, are also involved and will continue to engage in various activities involving digitalization. We are pleased that the 10th-grade students of the region have the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn, and grow together.”

Edgars Bajaruns, Director of Sigulda Technology Education Center: “‘Sigulda Puzzle Day’ is an opportunity for young people to showcase their ingenuity and ability to solve unconventional tasks, as well as develop the ability to work effectively in a team. Solving logic puzzles is a great way to get to know the STEM field and understand that it is suitable for everyone, as any technical science requires deep thinking, logical reasoning, and recognizing cause-and-effect relationships. We are pleased that together with Riga Business School and the event supporters, we can bring this international experience to Sigulda.”

Inese Muzikante, Interim Director of Riga Business School: “Logic games like ‘Sigulda Puzzle Day’ provide a fantastic platform for young people to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Such activities not only inspire improvement in IT knowledge but also build confidence that technology and programming can be both exciting and accessible to everyone. We are delighted to help introduce world-class materials and methods into the education system, sparking students’ interest in computer science and logic.”

The event will also be valuable for the teachers accompanying their teams to the game, as they will have the opportunity to attend an informative session on professional and personal skill development while the students work on their tasks.

Information about registration for the logic game has been provided to all high schools in the Sigulda region. Students are encouraged to contact their class teacher or school administration to register for the event.

“Sigulda Puzzle Day” is organized by Sigulda Municipality and Riga Business School in collaboration with the Sigulda Technology Education Center. The day is supported by Luminor Bank, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Baltic IT and Acer Baltics.
