SUMMARY:Guest lecture by Dr. Alminas Zaldokas
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: ESG Shocks in Global Supply Chains \nDr. Alminas Zaldokas \nFriday\, August 25 at 9:30-11:00  \n  \nCorporations are facing increasing pressure by customers\, workers\, shareholders\, and regulators to monitor and manage environmental and social (E&S) activities along their supply chains. Is it working? \nProf. Alminas Zaldokas and co-authors show that U.S. firms cut imports and are more likely to terminate a trade relationship when their international suppliers experience environmental and social (E&S) incidents. These trade cuts are larger for publicly-listed U.S. importers facing high E&S investor pressure and lead to cross-country supplier reallocation\, suggesting that E&S preferences in capital markets can have real effects in far-flung economies. Larger trade cuts around the scandal result in higher supplier E&S scores in subsequent years and in the eventual resumption of trade. Our results highlight the role of customers’ exit in ensuring suppliers’ E&S compliance along global supply chains. \nYou can read the full paper “ESG Shocks in Global Supply Chains” here. \n  \nHow to attend? \nPlease register here to attend the lecture: https://forms.gle/LbprYzpUMJu82who9 \nAll lectures will take place at Riga Business School (11 Skolas Street\, Riga) with an option to attend online via Zoom. \n  \nAbout the guest lecturer \n \nDr. Alminas Žaldokas \nAlminas Žaldokas is an Associate Professor in Finance at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). \nHis research focuses on the interaction between firm decisions in the financial product markets. In particular\, he studies corporate finance decisions that relate to the firm investment in innovation\, the formation of collusive arrangements between firms\, and the facilitation of ESG practices. This research has been published in such academic journals as Journal of Financial Economics\, Review of Financial Studies\, Journal of Accounting Research\, Management Science\, and others. \nAlminas Žaldokas received his PhD in Finance at INSEAD in 2012. His previous academic degrees include MSc in Finance and Economics from London School of Economics and BSc in Business and Economics from Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. He also currently serves as the Board Member at the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong\, pro bono academic adviser at the Lithuanian Competition Council\, and the Board Member at the Baltic Economic Association. \nMore about Prof.Zaldokas’ research: http://www.alminas.com/ \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Guest lecture by Prof. Kasper Meisner Nielsen
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Rich and responsible? The Rise of Responsible Investors \nProf. Kasper Meisner Nielsen\, Copenhagen Business School \nTuesday\, August 29 at 9:30-11:00 \n  \nWhat is motivating the rise of responsible investing? In this seminar\, Prof. Kasper Meisner Nielsen will present his research paper “Rich and responsible?” that finds that investors perceive responsible investing as a “luxury good”. \nThis research studies the rise of responsible investing (i.e.\, investing in assets with environmental and social benefits as well as financial returns) among investors in Denmark. From 2011 to 2021\, the average portfolio weight of responsible assets increases from 2.4% to 5.2%\, driven by an increasing fraction of investors with responsible mutual funds (0.9% to 11.3%) and green energy stocks (8.1% to 14.4%). Motivated by the observation that responsible investments concentrate among wealthy investors\, we use windfall wealth from inheritances to document that investors perceive responsible investing as a luxury good\, with demand partially motivated by a “warm glow” effect. \n  \nHow to attend? \nPlease register here to attend one or more lectures: https://forms.gle/LbprYzpUMJu82who9 \nThe lecture will take place at Riga Business School (11 Skolas Street\, Riga) with an option to attend online via Zoom. You will receive Zoom link\, if you register for the online option. \n  \nAbout the guest lecturer \n  \n \nProf. Kasper Meisner Nielsen \nKasper Meisner Nielsen is a Professor of Finance at Copenhagen Business School and adjunct professor at HKUST. He received his Bachelor of Science\, Master of Science\, and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Copenhagen.  \nProfessor Nielsen’s research interests are in behavioural finance\, corporate governance\, entrepreneurial finance\, family business\, and household finance. His research has featured in international newspapers and magazines including Business Week\, Financial Times\, Harvard Business Review\, International Herald Tribune\, The Economist\, The Times of India\, and Wall Street Journal. \nHe has studied the consequence of family succession on firm performance\, the value of independent directors\, the level of executive compensation\, why individuals shy away from stocks\, the effect of personal exposure to the global financial crisis on risk taking\, and households’ decisions to refinance their mortgage. His work has been published in academic journals including American Economic Review\, The Quarterly Journal of Economics\, Journal of Financial Economics\, Review of Financial Studies\, and others.  \nProfessor Nielsen has served as an external advisor\, consultant\, and lecturer to government agencies and companies in China\, Denmark\, and Hong Kong. \nMore about Prof. Nielsen’s research: http://www.kaspermeisnernielsen.com/
